The Celica 1600GT made its competition debut at the Japan All-Star Race held in Fuji in November 1971, and the three vehicles run in TS-b class swept first, second and third place finishes. The Celicaโs romp continued into 1972, with a win in the touring car class at the Suzuka Auto Race in March of that year. In April, it held off stiff competition from the Skyline GT-R and the Fairlady 240Z to win the overall victory and prove it was the best car in the business. The climax of the season, however, came on May 3 at the Japan Grand Prix, when the Celica grabbed first, second and fourth place, only giving up third to another Toyota design, the Corolla Levin. It was an age of near-total Toyota dominance on the Japanese motor sports scene.
