Sweden developed the Gripen (Griffin) to replace the aging Drakens and Viggens of the fifties and sixties. This exceptional aircraft maintains several unusual features, such as delta wings and canards, in order to increase the amount of mission profiles it can perform from short, isolated runways. The delta wings allow the Gripen to be incredibly maneuverable, even while carrying an 11,000 lb. payload at Mach 2.
