The M4 variant mounted a 76mm gun and a completely new turret, giving Shermans a fighting chance against the flanks and rear of the German heavies. In the field, crews uprated the armor on their tanks with tree branches, sandbags, cement blocks, anything they could scrounge… and they fought hard—hard enough to win, hard enough to conquer, hard enough to free Europe from the most tyrannical regime history has ever known.
