Ki45Kai Tei TORYU (NICK) IJA Fighter 1/48 Hasegawa

Although the Ki-45Kai design kept its original Ki-45 designation, it was for all intents and purposes an entirely new and different aircraft. The suffix Kai means ‘improved’ or ‘upgraded’: it was much larger and the elliptical main wings were exchanged for straight line tapering wings. The fuselage configuration was simplified with an eye to more efficient mass production. The top speed of the Ki-45Kai surpassed requested IJA specs, and both climb and operational cruising range were improved over the Ki-45 prototype. The design made its official debut after formal IJA adoption in February 1942, and a total of 1690 were produced. Differences in main armament configuration saw model variants designated as Koh, Otsu, Hei and Tei. The Toryu Tei saw the fitting of two Ho-5 20mm cannons onto the upper fuselage of the earlier Hei model. The Tei became an accomplished night fighter.
