Development of the K5 began at the famous Krupp steelworks under utmost secrecy in 1934. By 1940, eight had been built and successfully tested, confirming their awesome power. From February 1941, 25 of them went into frontline Wehrmacht service with the 712th, 713, and 765th Artillery Batteries. The gun trains were pulled by 40-ton diesel locomotives. A train normally carried 113 rounds of ammunition for the guns. The considerable time required to ready and reload after firing was a significant weak point for this weapon. All mechanical operations on the gun itself were electrically powered. The gun was always fixed in its lowest elevation during transport.
