The German army requirement for a large field kitchen dates back to 1908 with the expansion of the army prior to WWI. By 1913 two modern field kitchens had entered service, the Large designated the Hf.11 and the small the Hf.12. Both served throughout WWI and into the late 1930’s. Prior to WWII the Hf.11 was updated with a new chimney, wheels, towing hitch and modified compartments. The Hf.11 consisted of a Limber, which carried the supplies and was hitched to two or four draft horses. The Cooker was towed behind the Limber and both were constructed of wood with steel liners where necessary. The Hf.11 could feed up to 225 men at a time.
