In 1976 the F-15 Eagle went into service as the US Air Force’s most modern fighter aircraft. Built by McDonnell-Douglas, it became the backbone of US air defense in the 1990s. The F-15E Strike Eagle, an evolution of the F-15, has been in service since 1988. It is a ground attack version of the Eagle and is equipped with a large number of bombs and rockets. The F-15 is also used by Japan, Israel and Saudi Arabia.
